Two Orange County high school water polo standouts have decided to continue legacies with Stanford’s men’s program.

Foothill goalie Liam Harrison and Santa Margarita attacker Speedy Laster recently committed to the reigning NCAA champion Cardinal.

Harrison, a second-team All-County selection last season, will become the fourth Foothill goalie to play at Stanford, veteran Knights coach Jim Brumm said.

The 6-foot-4 senior will follow the footsteps of Sandy Hohener, Nick Ellis and John Gansel.

Hohener was the most recent Foothill goalie to play at Stanford, earning All-American honors 2005-07. Ellis ranks fourth all-time in saves at Stanford (1999-2002). And Gansel was a four-time All-American (1977-80) for the Cardinal.

Harrison earned All-CIF-SS Division 2 honors last season after helping the Knights capture a third straight title in the division. He was the Division 2 player of the year as a sophomore.

Laster picked the school his father, Jeremy, starred for 1992-95. The elder Laster scored 183 goals for Stanford before becoming an Olympian in 1996.

The younger Laster will also play for Stanford coach John Vargas, the former Corona del Mar coach who guided Laster on the U.S. national team and as an assistant and head coach.

At Stanford, Laster also will reunite with former Santa Margarita teammate AJ Rossman, who has developed into a standout 2-meter defender.

Laster, a 6-foot-1 senior, excels on the counterattack and is a crafty passer.
